In Years KG up to Year 6, the National Curriculum covers Mathematics, English and Science All other areas are encompassed by the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) was originally developed for use in Shell schools worldwide and has now been adopted by over 150 schools in the UK. It is fully approved for use in UK schools. The two central ideas behind the IPC are the use of a “Topic based” approach rather than teaching “Subjects” one after another and secondly to include the latest ideas about effective teaching in the materials themselves. Units of Work in the IPC The units of work are where learning happens. More than 70 different and exciting thematic units of work have been developed for children aged 6-7 (Milepost 1), 8-9 (Milepost 2) and 10-12 (Milepost 3). Included are units such as: Milepost 1 The Stories People Tell, I’m Alive, The World of Our Senses Milepost 2 Chocolate, They Made a Difference, Treasure, Survival Milepost 3 What Price Progress?, What Does Our World Look Like?, The Global Swap-shop
Brain-friendly learning The IPC transforms brain research theory into classroom practice, giving teachers, children and schools the most up-to-date learning activities and approaches. Each unit of work is designed to help children learn through their own learning styles, their multiple intelligences, high-challenges, low stress activities, the big picture and more. There are even special units that help children learn about their own learning! Assessment Each unit of work provides advice to teachers on how to assess what children have learned whilst engaged in their work. Even more helpful, the IPC Assessment for Learning Programme provides everything you need to identify the stages of children’s skill development in eight subjects of the curriculum and international-mindedness at each of The three stages. More information can be found at the IPC website http://www.internationalprimarycurriculum.com
