The school and life in Cairo <see our powerpoint - 53MB>

The school was opened 8 years ago to serve the residents of Al Rehab City – a newly built suburb of Cairo. It is owned by the Talaat Mostaffa group, a very large Cairo based property developer with numerous sub divisions. Al Rehab is a gated community which means it is fenced and has security at access points. It is near the airport and the new Cairo ring road so transport links are good. Al Rehab is a very well-organised, clean and comparatively quiet district. There is an excellent food court with many well known brands such as Costa Coffee, Pizza Hut, KFC and so on. There are many small shops offering all the usual requirements and 2 Malls are slowly filling up. Being 30 minutes out of town means pollution is low and the air quality is good.

The economy of Cairo is booming and the population is increasing steadily. Most of the boom comes from construction and the city is expanding. Developments like Al Rehab city are many but it is fair to say that the quality in Al Rehab is  above the average in Egypt and the developers have invested heavily in gardens, leisure facilities and high quality infrastructure to attract residents. The British School is a very important part of that infrastructure and we place a lot of emphasis on ensuring high quality in everything we do. Al Rehab City houses about 50,000 people in a mix of low rise apartments and villas. There is a very good recreation centre and swimming pool free to school staff or with minimal charges for squash, pool and so on.

There is a large mall with a Carrefour supermarket about 30 minutes drive away and a world class mall with many international shops and a good Spinneys supermarket about 20 minutes drive away. The School provides free transport to and from these Malls weekly.

We take children aged 3 years plus into our KG1 classes and have 4 form entry up to Year 6. Years 7 to 11 are 2 form entry and years 12 and 13 are 1 form entry. We follow the National Curriculum of England using QCA work schemes and text books and schemes from major UK houses such as Jolly Phonics, Heineman Maths, Oxford Reading Tree and so on. In September 2007, we introduced the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) which has given a terrific boost to our enthusiasm levels.

We use the Key Stage 2 SATs and are registered with the DfES.  In the secondary phase we are a registered centre for Edexcel and Cambridge examinations and the students follow a Key Stage 3 and 4 pattern similar to the UK which culminates in 9 GCSE or IGCSE subject exams. AS and A2 follows as the pre university preparation.

The “British” model of education is very popular in the Middle East as it is seen to have two major advantages. Firstly it is delivered in English so children develop a high level of competency in this key language. Secondly it is seen to be child-centred, reputable and flexible with a clear set of UK validated assessments which are recognised internationally and which enable smooth transfer from one to school to another.

A key difference from the UK model is that schools are also expected to run more as service businesses like a hotel and there is great emphasis placed on good relations with parents and high levels of service. Our parents are very demanding and we work hard to deliver a top quality education and level of service to them.

The Cairo experience.

Cairo is a fantastic city, with an epic history embedded into the framework of human civilization. This quote from a blog about Cairo gives a flavour of life here "You know you've been in Cairo too long when you hate the place but cannot imagine living anywhere else. It’s magical at dawn when the voice of God floats over the rooftops as you pad softly on literally the dust of time that blew in last night,  or on the days when the water is off, ants are in the sugar bowl and you stub your toe on a tile - aaaaargh get me out of here"

You will experience all of this no doubt along with the teeming multitudes in downtown or the serene isolation of a felucca glide on the Nile. Cairo is a place you will never forget.

Egypt has much to offer the visitor besides Cairo, from the fantastic scuba diving in the Red Sea, to the Cataracts Hotel at Aswan so beloved of Agatha Christie and Winston Churchill, from the beautiful Mediterranean resort of Alexandria to the marvels of the ancient word at Luxor there is certain to be somewhere in Egypt you'll find ideal.

The Egyptian people are very warm and friendly and proud to show you their fascinating country. Crime is low although petty theft is a problem in some areas and the usual cautions should be exercised.

Cairo is also a predominantly Islamic city with a very long history as a trading centre, its ways of doing things can sometimes clash with what “westerners” are used to. Market forces are very much to the forefront in this society and grinding poverty can thrust itself into your face when you least expect it.

Salaries in Cairo are low by Western standards and since your accommodation is free the cost of living is cheap for foreigners (even though the locals expect you to pay a bit more for everything). A basic meal in a cheap café will be under 2 pounds Sterling, fast foods like Burger King, Pizza Hut and so on are from 1.50 to 3.00 pounds and a "posh" meal can easily be under 10.00 pounds. Many locally made items are available at very low prices but imported goods are comparable in price to UK or more expensive.

Once you obtain your residence permit you are eligible for “local” prices on some travel and accommodation in hotels which can often cut the cost by 3 or 4 times the tourist rate.

The teacher package

Basic Salary is comparable with similar schools and varies according to a scale depending on qualifications and experience.  Management responsibilities are paid according to a points system with one point valued currently at 100 Sterling per month. For UK nationals employed as educational experts, the first two years of employment is not taxed in Egypt.

We offer a 2 year contract September to August with paid holidays in a pattern similar to UK. Extensions after the initial period can be for one or two years by mutual consent.

Main features :

Free accommodation with all necessary furniture and air conditioning, TV and so on. Usually the accommodation is a two or three bed roomed apartment in Al Rehab which is not shared. Alternatively, an allowance can be paid if the member of staff wishes to make their own arrangements and venture off by themselves. Or sharing can be allowed if requested.

Annual airfare Cairo – Heathrow airport- Cairo.

High quality free medical insurance cover in Egypt

Free education for up to 3 children at the school

Free membership of Al Rehab recreation centre and swimming pools

Help with attending courses and other CPD after 1 year’s service

End of contract gratuity

At present the Egyptian Pound or Livre Egyptien (LE) buys about 10 pence Sterling so to convert prices from LE to Sterling, you simply divide by 10. The currency floats and it is volatile.  In the past 10 years it has been as high as 5 LE to a pound and as low as 12 LE to the pound.

Most staff say that you can live very comfortably on 500 Sterling a month as this would be regarded as a very good salary for a local. So it is possible to put aside a significant portion of your salary. We quote salaries in Sterling to protect staff from variations in exchange rates and for your convenience we pay in both Sterling or Dollars and 25% in LE. We ask staff each month to nominate how much of each they require. You can have a Sterling account at the NSGB bank near the school and money transfer to UK or elsewhere is straightforward.

We intend that as the school grows we will be able to improve the benefits package. It is important to the school that staff should feel valued and appreciated.

The staff are a good bunch and if you want to work hard and play hard you’ll find a warm welcome here.
