Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10& 11)

The curriculum for Key Stage 4 is currently evolving and will continue to change over the next academic year. For the Year 11 students they took 4 IGCSE examinations at the end of Year 10 (English, Mathematics and 2 Sciences), and will take further examinations in their 4 optional subjects this year. This is alongside a further 2 subjects taken in Year 11 as a one year course. These two subjects can be further IGCSE’s; or for those students with a B or higher in their Year 10 IGCSE’s these can be AS Level courses in Mathematics and/or the Sciences.

The students in Year 10 were included in Key Stage 4 during the last academic year (Starting in Year 9). The students here are halfway through their IGCSE courses to be completed at the end of Year 10. This allows the students to complete full A2 courses in Years 11 and 12 and will makes the students more competitive when looking at university applications. The students take the IGCSE subjects of English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics Chemistry, ICT, Geography and have a choice between Business and French.

The students in Year 9 are starting on their 2 year IGCSE Courses. They study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and ICT. The students then select their other subjects from the following list, the only condition being that they must take at least two sciences. The optional subjects that the students can choose from are Art, Arabic IGCSE, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Economics, French, Geography, History, Physics, Sociology and Travel & Tourism.

Studies in all 3 of these year groups also include their compulsory Arabic curriculum, along with non-examined PE.

Curriculum time allocation (Number of 45 minute lessons per week)

Assessment

As at Key Stage 3, a weekly, but probably more substantial, homework is set in all classroom based subjects. Marks are recorded and advice given on how to improve. Regular formative assessments take place throughout the year which helps teachers to intervene with individuals and groups and inform future teaching plans.

In year 9 the pattern of five, formal summative assessments is maintained. These are likely to be formal tests, using graded material from past exam papers. Results give useful information about the effectiveness of revision techniques and also give an increasingly accurate picture of the IGCSE grade which matches each student’s performance to date. Effort grades (A – E) and IGCSE grades are reported.

In years 10 & 11, students complete their IGCSE courses and undertake planned revision with subject teachers. Two formal summative assessments are taken in Term 1 and a Mock examination is taken during Term 2. Effort and attainment grades are reported to parents and the Mock examination performance is considered when predicting grades for the examination boards
